Who is Bonhomme Carnaval?

The Québec Winter Carnival has gained international fame over the years through its renowned key figure, Bonhomme Carnaval, living replica of the snowman that enchanted the youth of all Quebecers.

Celebrity of the Carnival, Bonhomme is a recurring figure during all the activities. Upon his official arrival in the Capital, the Mayor of Quebec gives him the keys to the city, making him the undisputed master of the kingdom.

Bonhomme Carnaval is the ambassador of this celebration to foreigners. He is everywhere, even in territories exceeding the boundaries of the city, and is the symbol of the festivities of this joyous period of the year. His mission is to promote the Carnival all around the world.

Since 1955, date of the first annual edition of the Carnival, Bonhomme Carnaval has personified the “joie de vivre” associated with this winter celebration. According to a recent Leger Marketing study, he is a figure recognised by 96% of Quebecers and about 60% of Canadians.

Bonhomme Carnaval is not a simple mascot, he acts officially and speaks for and in the name of the Carnival. He proudly wears the traditional red hat and arrow sash.
