Close to 60 teams square off over the frozen waters of the St. Lawrence River, competing in one of four categories: Elite Men's, Elite Women's, Competitive and Sports.
Teams from the Elite Women's and Sports categories must cross the river twice between the Louise Basin in Quebec City and quai Paquet in Lévis. Teams from the Elite Men's and Competitive categories must cross the river three times instead. The longest of all races, namely the races for the Elite Men's and Competitive categories, can last up to an hour and thirty minutes depending on weather and the tide.
Team departures :
- Elite Women's: 11:30 a.m.
- Sport: 11:40 a.m.
- Elite Men's: 1:30 p.m.
- Competitive: 1:40 p.m.
The Carnival also offers the Canoe Race Pre-Race Event, where the boaters will explain their sport and an analyst will describe their actions live. This is your chance to learn more about the competitors’ preparation and training before a major race.
No Effigy required. Event duration varies with the tide.
