Sustainable Development —  Our Actions

Our actions

The Québec Winter Carnival cares about the environment and its community. Thanks to various initiatives and with the support of our partner Énergir, the Carnival stands out as a leader in sustainable development. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact while offering an inclusive and accessible experience for all. From local purchasing to active mobility, through recycling and diversity, here are our main actions in the short, medium and long term.

Carnival and sustainable practices
Eco-friendly office
At the office

Inclusion and diversity are core values for the Québec Winter Carnival. We are committed to providing an accessible environment for all.

  • Small signs near switches to remind people to turn off lights when a space isn’t in use.
  • Bike parking available to employees to encourage active transportation.
  • Personal trash bins replaced by shared bins in common areas.
  • Remote work encouraged to cut energy consumption, paper use, and commuting-related GHG emissions.
Active and public mobility
Active and public mobility
  • RTC stations located near the sites.
  • Partnership with AmigoExpress to encourage carpooling.
  • Winter bike parking courtesy of Le Vélo Vert.
Recycling
Recycling
  • Effigies made in Québec from recycled maple tubing — 100% recycled and Québec-made.
  • Program printed on recycled and recyclable paper.
  • Numerous sorting centers in place (waste, recycling, and food residues).
  • Organic materials sent to Québec City’s biomethanation center, transformed into RNG and fertilizer.
  • Reducing the use of single-use plastics at events by prioritizing sustainable and reusable alternatives such as eco-cups, ice glasses, and the elimination of straws.
Carbon offset (COOPFA / Scol’ERE)
Awareness & outreach
  • GHG offset through educational carbon credits from the Scol’ERE carbon market (available to participants in the ticketing system).
  • Redistribution of food surplus to La Tablée des Chefs to fight waste and food insecurity.
  • Consignaction boxes installed on our sites for refundable containers.
  • The Québec Winter Carnival is also proud to have obtained the Biosphere certification, an international distinction recognized for its alignment with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and its approval by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. This achievement marks a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable development.

Local purchasing and upcycling
Local purchasing and upcycling
  • Promotion of the “Made in Québec” label to encourage quality local purchasing and support the province’s economy.
  • Recycling our sets and upcycling materials to give them a second life.
  • Carnival dome made entirely in Québec, reducing our environmental impact.
Inclusion and diversity
Inclusion & diversity

Inclusion and diversity are core values of the Québec Winter Carnival. We are committed to providing an environment that is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, origin, or ability. Here are some of the initiatives we are taking to make our event more inclusive:

  • Family space: heated area for nursing, diaper changes, and bottle warming, with coloring and toys.
  • Universally accessible site (access ramps and adapted toilets).
  • Free admission for companions of people with reduced mobility.
  • Reserved area for people with reduced mobility during Night Parades and shows.
